Internal consistency measures how well the items on a test or survey assess the same underlying concept. A high internal consistency indicates that the items are closely related and reliably measure the same idea. One common statistic for measuring internal consistency is Cronbach’s alpha.
For example, if a survey is designed to measure job satisfaction, and most questions (such as about enjoyment of work tasks and relationships with coworkers) yield similar responses, it would have high internal consistency.
