Variance Calculator

This variance calculator makes it easy to measure how spread out your data are. Just enter your numbers in the text box, separated by commas or spaces. Then choose whether you want to calculate the sample variance or the population variance.

The calculator will show you the variance, mean, count, and the sum of squares, along with a step-by-step solution and a histogram of your data. In the variance calculator:

  • Choose sample if your data are a subset of an entire population and you want to estimate the population value.
  • Choose population if your data contain all the values of interest and you don’t want to apply the results to a larger population.
