Operationalization

By Jim Frost

« Back to Glossary Index

Operationalization is the process of defining abstract concepts or variables in measurable, concrete terms so they can be observed or tested in research. It translates broad ideas like “stress” or “job satisfaction” into specific, quantifiable indicators.

For example, a researcher might operationalize “stress” by measuring cortisol levels in saliva or by using a standardized stress questionnaire.
