An ecological fallacy occurs when conclusions about individual behavior are drawn from analyses of group-level data. Just because a relationship appears at the group level does not guarantee that the same relationship holds true for individuals within those groups.
For example, if a city with higher average income levels also has higher rates of physical fitness, it would be an ecological fallacy to assume that any individual with a higher income is personally more fit than someone with a lower income.
